Quick Solutions to Common Cooktop Problems
Not sure if you need cooktop repair service?
Check the following list of quick solutions to see if there is an easy fix to your cooktop problems.
My electric cooktop won't heat up...
- First, check if power is running to your cooktop or stovetop by checking for a light when enabling a burner.
- If the cooktop light does not turn on, check if the cooktop's circuit breaker is tripped in your electrical panel. Reset your circuit breaker for your cooktop and check if any of the lights on the cooktop turn on.
- If not hardwired, make sure that the cooktop power plug is fully inserted directly into a power outlet. Avoid any extension cords or power strips.
- If just one coil or element is not working, when the cooktop burner is cool reseat the coil connection and test the burner again. If it still doesn't work, try testing a different coil in the same burner connection to determine if the issue is with the coil.
- If you have an induction cooktop, first check if the cookware you are using is induction compatible. Induction cooktops only work with cookware that is ferromagnetic; therefore, you must use cast iron or ferromagnetic stainless-steel cookware. Aluminum, copper, and glass cookware will not usually work. Check with the manufacturer of your cookware to determine if it is compatible with induction cooktops.

My gas cooktop won't light...
- First, check each burner to determine which burners are affected. If it's just a single burner that is affected, turn off the burner and remove the grate and burner cap. Look for and remove any food or debris that could be interfering with the problem burner. Look and reconnect any loose wires and test the burner again.
- If all the burners are affected, make sure the gas shutoff valve for the cooktop is fully open. Also make sure you hear a clicking sound and smell gas when trying to light a burner.
- If you don't hear a clicking sound, but you do smell gas, then the electrical connection could be the problem. Make sure the cooktop is plugged into a power outlet. Avoid any extension cords or power strips. Check if the cooktop's circuit breaker is tripped in your electrical panel. Reset your circuit breaker for your cooktop and test the burners again. If your gas cooktop still will not light you will need to call for service.
- If you hear a clicking sound, but you don't smell gas, then you may have an issue with the flow of gas to your cooktop. Test the other gas appliances in your home to determine if gas is flowing properly to your home's gas supply line. If all the other gas appliances are not lighting correctly, you may need to contact your local utilities to verify that gas service is working in your area. If your gas cooktop is the only gas appliance that is having issues with the flow of gas you will need to call for service.

My gas cooktop is taking a long time to heat...
- First, test each burner to determine if all burners on your gas cooktop are affected. If some burners are putting out a weak flame, then the burners openings are probably clogged and will need to be cleaned. Turn off your gas cooktop and check each of the burners for debris that could be clogging the burner openings. Remove the grates and burner caps and let them soak in hot soapy water overnight. Remove any debris from the surface of the grates and burner caps using a stiff brush. Remove any debris from the exposed gas valves with a toothpick.
- If all of the burners on your gas cooktop are putting out a weak flame and you have thoroughly cleaned the cooktop, and verified that the cooktop's gas shutoff valve is fully open, then the issue is with the flow of gas to your cooktop. First, determine if the other gas appliances in your home are working correctly. If all of your gas appliances appear to be putting out a weak flame, you may have issues with the flow of gas to your home. Contact your local utilities to verify that gas service is working properly in your area. If the flow of gas only affects your gas cooktop, then you will need to call for service.
